S. Carey
In the Stream
Jagjaguwar
FREE
Listen & Buy
This free download of "In the Stream" is taken from All We Grow, the stunning full-length debut from Bon Iver drummer Sean Carey (out now on Jagjaguwar). This classically trained percussionist's lush compositions seem informed by the intimate, autumnal folk of For Emma, Forever, latter Talk Talk/Mark Hollis, and modern composers such as Philip Glass and Steve Reich, as gorgeous, atmospheric orchestrations and soft-plucked guitar ebb and flow around Carey's whisper-voiced melodies and harmonies.

The self-titled debut album from Women was one of 2008's "sleeper hits" in the shop, so we're doing our best to spread the word about Public Strain, the just-released full-length from this Calgary band (comprised of all men). While there's no shortage of musicians abusing their old Tascam 4-tracks these days, Women's merging of lo-fi pop and reverb-drenched experimental gestures is the closest we've heard a group come to matching the claustrophobic genius of Swell Maps or GbV during their early years. Download "Eyesore" for free and see what we're talking about!

Sufjan Stevens
All Delighted People EP
Asthmatic Kitty Records
$4.99
Listen & Buy
This one caught us all by surprise, a brand new 60-minute EP from Sufjan Stevens, available for download for just $4.99! Far from an odds and sods type release, All Delighted People kicks off with an epic, 11-and-a-half-minute title track which twists and turns around a dense orchestral arrangement and a soaring choir. (A "Classic Rock" version of the song is reprised later.) Other highlights include the gorgeous funereal ballad, "The Owl and the Tanager," and the 17-minute-long "Djohariah," a heady slow-burner that takes its time to crescendo, with a pretty great, lengthy guitar solo juxtaposed against a lovely chorus of voices.
Various Artists
Total 11
Kompakt
$14.99
Listen & Buy
Perhaps the most diverse selection of artists and tracks in Kompakt's annual Total series, this two-disc set sees the Cologne label treading into several sub-genres and still remaining one of electronic music's most consistently forward-thinking entities. We find staples like Matias Aguayo, Jonas Bering, Gui Boratto, Thomas Fehlmann, the Field, Justus Kohnke, DJ Koze, Jurgen Paape, and, of course, label co-founders Michael Mayer and Wolfgang Voigt, alongside newer names like Three Lions (a collaboration between Jorg Burger, Superpitcher and Rebolledo), the shoegaze-inspired Walls (remixed by Allez-Allez), Sebastien Bouchet, who contributes a German take on UK funky, and It's a Fine Line offering some Teutonic rockabilly, who woulda thought!?
Antony & the Johnsons
Thank You for Your Love
Secretly Canadian
$4.99
Listen & Buy
The lead single off of Antony & the Johnsons' upcoming full-length, Swanlights, Mr. Hegarty's pathos-tinged croon is close to exuberant in "Thank You for Your Love," a gospel-inspired ballad that slowly swells towards a surprisingly upbeat, funky close (for Antony, that is), complete with a rollicking horn section. The other four songs are non-album tracks, including gorgeous covers of Bob Dylan's "Pressing On" and John Lennon's "Imagine," where Antony is joined by William Basinski who contributes subtle, electronic atmospherics beneath the gentle plucks of the guitar.
Dylan LeBlanc
Paupers Field
Rough Trade
$9.99
Listen & Buy
Not even drinking age, Dylan LeBlanc sounds convincingly world weary on his debut full-length, which is filled with great Gram Parsons-inspired country shufflers from start to finish. The Louisiana singer/songwriter sticks to his plucked acoustic guitar while crack session musicians lay out the lush lap steel, honky tonk piano, and mandolin. Emmylou Harris also glides into the studio to provide backup vocals.
The Tallest Man on Earth
The Tallest Man on Earth EP
Dead Oceans
$4.99
Listen & Buy
Dead Oceans re-releases the Tallest Man on Earth's hard-to-find, self-titled debut EP from 2006 to a much wider audience. Recorded at his home in Dalarna, Sweden, these five songs find Kristian Matsson singing into a scratchy tape machine accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and banjo -- all great ingredients that laid the groundwork for his triumphant 2008 breakthrough, Shallow Grave, also now available as a download for the first time on Other Music Digital.
Magic Kids
Memphis
True Panther Sounds
$9.99
Listen & Buy
No, Magic Kids certainly aren't the first indie band to be inspired by the Beach Boys' harmonies and lush, Jack Nitzsche/Van Dyke Parks orchestration, and they certainly won't be the last, but this young Memphis band have spun these classic influences into a great debut, filled with sunny, nostalgic pop songs that seem perfectly tailored for these waning days of summer.
Coil Sea
Coil Sea
Thrill Jockey Records
$9.99
Listen & Buy
Members of Big in Japan and Arboretum join forces for a 40-minute instrumental psychedelic freak-out, spread across four engaging and propulsive tracks. Recorded over the course of two all-day sessions, this debut EP is slow yet powerful, fuzzed to the gills yet melodic, and filled with virtuoso playing and tasty chops.
Bear in Heaven
Beast Rest Forth Mouth
Hometapes
$9.99
Listen & Buy
Hometapes re-releases Bear in Heaven's great sophomore full-length from last year, this time with a host of remixes by Studio, Twin Shadow, the Hundred in the Hands, High Places, the Field, Pink Skull, and more. Delivering an exciting blend of psychedelic, prog, and '80s-tinged pop, the group has perfected the art of layering, resulting in a dense-yet-wholly-listenable mix of driving, tribal cuts.
