			VARIOUS ARTISTS Wheedle's Groove: 45 Box Set (Light in the Attic) Originally released in 2004, Wheedle's Groove skimmed the cream off the top of the vibrant Seattle funk and soul scene of the late-'60s and early-'70s, and established Light in the Attic as one of the best reissue labels of the modern era. Newbury was inarguably one of the most ambitious and talented songwriters to ever grace the streets of Nashville, a man held in awe by such peers as Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash. 			BOBBY CHARLES Bobby Charles - Deluxe (Rhino Handmade) "Street People" "Save Me Jesus" "What Are We Doing?" Everybody loves that unlikely '70s hybrid we call country-soul, and while there were some great reissues in the genre this year from the likes of Jim Ford and Larry Jon Wilson, this amazing set from New Orleans native Bobby Charles is hard to beat. Charles is best known for the hits he wrote for rock and rollers like Bill Haley and Fats Domino, but his brand of Cajun swamp-rock is pure magic; this album was recorded in 1971 at Bearsville, with Dr. John, the Band and David Sanborn filling out the ranks, and it is a gritty, soulful vintage pop record that still sounds amazing today. Rhino Handmade has pulled out all the stops here -- the remastering is excellent and the album is augmented with another dozen songs from the same 1971 sessions, and 13 from '74, plus a 30-minute interview with Charles from '72, just before the original record's release. $54.99 CDx3


			THE ALBUM COVER ART OF STUDIO ONE RECORDS Deluxe 12"x12" 200 Page Book (Soul Jazz Books) Another beautiful coffee-table book from Soul Jazz, this 12"x12" hardcover collects hundreds of album designs from the essential Jamaican reggae label Studio One, with a nice lengthy intro by reggae historian and Blood & Fire Records founder, Steve Barrow. 			VARIOUS ARTISTS Boddie Recording Company: Cleveland, Ohio (The Numero Group) Few labels approach box sets with the meticulous care and passion of the Numero Group and this three-CD or five-LP collection of underground soul, funk, doo-wop and gospel from Cleveland's Boddie Recording Company is one of their best. Culled from 10,000 hours of tape, and more than 300 LPs and 45s originally released on Thomas and Louise Boddie's own Soul Kitchen, Bounty and Luau labels, Numero has collected close to 60 tracks recorded between 1958 and 1973, and the set shows a depth and diversity that is invigorating. 			VARIOUS ARTISTS Titan: It's All Pop (The Numero Group) "Shark" Gary Charlson "I Hope" Scott McCarl Another solid set from the Numero Group in this year's Holiday Gift Guide, and for anyone who likes their music Byrds- and Beatles-informed, with a sprinkle of glammy swagger and US AM radio sheen, this is nothing less than a treasure trove. Titan's existence was short-lived, but the Nebraska-based record label's output was undoubtedly sweet; the four slabs of wax here feature the likes of Arlis! (who's got the Raspberries thing down pat), Kim Fowley cohort Bobby Sky, glam-poppers the Boys (who deservedly get one of the records to themselves on the LP version), and more. 			POPOL VUH Werner Herzog Soundtracks - Box Set (SPV) "Engel der Gegenwart" "Morgengruss II" "Venus Principle" Popul Vuh's sublime soundtracks to Werner Herzog's classic films of the '70s and '80s are as iconic as the movies themselves, and Florian Fricke's evocative guitar and synthesizer work was never better than when he was collaborating with Herzog. This lovely limited set from SPV includes Aguirre (1972), Heart of Glass (1976), Nosferatu (1979), Fitzcarraldo (1982), and Cobra Verde (1987), plus a 98-page book full of photos and notes. 			RIDE Nowhere: 20th Anniversary Edition (Rhino Handmade) "Kaleidoscope" "Sennen" "Like a Daydream" Ride's 1990 debut LP is one of the best documents of the shoegaze era, and for our money the best album the band ever made. This wonderful edition includes the brilliant Fall EP (which was also included on the original American CD edition of the album), along with all four tracks from 1991's Today Forever EP, really making this a complete picture of the best period in Ride's career. In addition to Rhino Handmade's lavish packaging, the set is rounded out with a full concert recording of their first appearance in Los Angeles. 			VARIOUS ARTISTS Opika Pende: Africa at 78RPM (Dust-to-Digital) This four-disc set of 100 sides culled from Excavated Shellac architect Jonathan Ward's extensive and excellent collection of African 78s traverses Tunisia to South Africa, Algeria to Zanzibar, reaching the remote islands of Seychelles and Reunion. This impossibly rare music paints an aural picture of nearly the whole of Africa between 1909 and the 1960s, and it's fitting to consider this set as the African equivalent to Harry Smith's game changer, the Anthology of American Folk Music; it exclusively contains music created by the people, bought by the people, and, for better or worse, music reflecting the social and economic conditions of the people. 			SUN RA This Planet Is Doomed: The Science Fiction Poetry of Sun Ra (Kicks Books) Collecting all of Sun Ra's science fiction poetry for the first time in this stunning new paperback, archive director Michael Anderson culled through hours of audio recordings and transcriptions, finding a trove of powerful, celestial writing from Ra, including several "lost" poems never before available. With a substantial forward from Amiri Baraka and an introduction from science fiction historian Bhob Stewart, this is a must for any Sun Ra fan. 			THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN Psychocandy - Expanded Darklands - Expanded (Edsel) Deluxe reissues of two classics from this wildly influential, awesome band, Psychocandy (1985) and Darklands (1987). The debut album adds all the b-sides, demos, outtakes and rarities, and a DVD with promo videos, TV appearances and rare live footage of the time, including the crowd destroying the North London Polytechnic Auditorium during an infamous JAMC riot. THE SMITHS

If we can speak frankly (Mr. Shankly...sorry!) about box sets from incendiary bands, most fans already own the albums, singles, and plenty of the b-sides, and more often than not drool over short-run collections like this one, but never treat themselves -- and then it's out of print. So if there's a Smiths fan in your life -- and there's sure to be at least one -- you cannot go wrong with trying to squeeze this box into their Christmas stocking, unless of course, they already own this set, and if they do, you'd have certainly seen it nicely displayed under their Moz poster. All four of the group's studio albums (The Smiths, Meat Is Murder, The Queen Is Dead and Strangeways, Here We Come), their sole live album (Rank) and three compilations (Hatful of Hollow, The World Won't Listen and Louder Than Bombs) are nicely remastered and packaged in mini-LP replica sleeves and include a booklet with expanded liner notes. 			SHE & HIM A Very She & Him Christmas (Merge) We've spent every Christmas with Zooey Deschanel ever since Elf arrived back in 2003 (possibly the best Xmas movie ever), and her vocal turns on the soundtrack were the first time most people ever realized the starlet could sing. Now Deschanel is both a TV star and a pop star, and she (& Him) surprised us with a nice musical gift this year, recording a whole album of seasonal songs with her partner M. Ward, keeping things simple and playing to their strengths -- namely, her warm, playful and effortlessly emotional singing, and his great guitar work and natural, relaxed production style. The record is all room tone, gentle acoustic strumming and the subtlest embellishments, with the duo covering all the classics and a few obscurities. It's for the best that Buddy the Elf doesn't make any guest appearances, as he certainly would have broken the lovely dulcet tone of the album, but She & Him have made a new holiday favorite and yes, the whole family will enjoy. $14.99 CD $19.99 LP

This is the second volume of raw American gospel that Yeti magazine founder/editor Mike McGonigal has curated for Tompkins Square, once again culling records that display a fierce, street-level approach to music making that could appeal to fans of punk or ethnographic field recordings as much as they could fans of traditional religious music. Most all of the groups included here were clearly in the sway of the "modern" soul sounds that ruled the black community (and really, much of the world) in the '60s and '70s; it is music by and for the people, and oftentimes you can hear those people singing and clapping along to tracks cut live in front of the congregation. Hours of great, inspirational music spread across three discs with meticulous notes from McGonigal make this a must-have for even the saddest sinner.

			R. CRUMB The Complete Record Cover Collection (W. W. Norton & Company) Robert Crumb has probably reached as many people with his album artwork as he has with his deeply influential comics. Beginning with Big Brother & the Holding Company's Cheap Thrills in 1968, Crumb's offbeat humor and inimitable style graced hundreds of records over the years, from top-selling rock bands to underground favorites, and many classic blues and old-time music reissues (Crumb is an infamous 78 collector). This lovely hardcover slip-cased book (it looks like a vintage multi-platter 78 set) compiles them all, adding another page -- more like 96 pages -- to this essential artist's list of achievements.
