BREAKAGE
Foundation
(Digital Soundboy)
"Open Up"
"Vial" feat. Burial
London based producer Breakage, a/k/a James Boyle, has been breaking beats since 2000. Through the years, he's maintained a steady rise within the drum'n'bass scene, able to shift with the ever-evolving sounds coming from the UK. Beginning on 4hero's Reinforced imprtin, Boyle has releases countless 12"s and remixes on taste-making labels like Planet Mu and Bassbin, laying down a strong track record along the way. His most recent remix is for Massive Attacks' "Paradise Circus," where he skillfully re-imagines the song in almost two parts, one a more headstrong filtered house vibe, while the other brings back the sped-up breaks of d'n'b. He is now signed to Digital Soundboy, the label of '90s drum'n'bass pioneer Shy FX, which sort of describes his work perfectly: digital soundboy.
A hearty blend of reggae aesthetics and up-to-the-minute technology, for Foundation, his newest and most wide-reaching album, Breakage leads us on a diverse and engaging journey. His skills seem to be in the ability to merge genres, always aimed at the dancefloor, yet his style can transform from dubby downtempo, to sound system-influenced dubstep, to grime and UK hip-hop, and from updated crisp drum'n'bass to snappy UK funky. On the anthemic "Higher," he samples, then freaks, the "Hallelujah" chorus from the beloved Happy Mondays song to nice effect. It's been a while since I've heard such a diverse yet solid dance album, much in line with the full-lengths from Benga, yet this reaches further. Boyle's sound is near perfect, a very British brew of dub, breaks, deep vibes and digital soul. His work with vocalists is successful throughout with a variety of singers and rappers, including Roots Manuva, Doneao, Erin, and Zarif. There are full-throttle R&B vocals, fiery reggae toasters, and frantic British rappers, but the biggest surprise may be from the cavernous mechanics of guest Burial. I'll leave that one for you to discover on your own. This is great stuff, fresh and vibrant, dancefloor ready, and headphone welcoming. One of the best electronic long players I've heard so far this year. And further proof that drum'n'bass is back, though some will argue it never left. [DG]
