OTHER MUSIC & DIG FOR FIRE'S SXSW LAWN PARTY WRAP-UP
Another SXSW Lawn Party is behind us, and wow, what a great two days of music and seeing old friends and making new ones. There are seriously too many highlights to even begin to write about here, but we will say that this year's event was by far the best one yet. We were very lucky to have two gorgeous spring-like days at the French Legation Museum, fantastic performances from every artist, and record-breaking attendance. In the coming week's, our Lawn Party partners Dig For Fire will be posting films on Babelgum.com, which we'll also feature on the blog page of our digital store. So even if you weren't able to join us in Austin, you'll be able to catch performances from each of the artists that played our event -- including the first SXSW show from the xx (who were THE band to see in Austin this year); Dam-Funk getting' down with his keytar; and a captivating, rare acoustic set from Thurston Moore, who closed out the party on our valley stage with an enrapt crowd sitting around him in a circle on the grass. We'll be announcing these film premieres in our email Updates. Finally, and most importantly, we want to say thank you to everyone who came out to the Other Music & Dig For Fire Lawn Party. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

  WHITE HINTERLAND
Kairos
(Dead Oceans)

"Icarus"
"Bow and Arrow"

Casey Dienel's 2008 debut as White Hinterland, Phylactery Factory was a lovely if not safe record of wispy, jazz-inflected pop that revealed a gifted singer-songwriter still on her way to finding her voice and vision. Ironically enough, it took a five-song EP of skewed French covers released later that year to show that Dienel had set her sights higher than making café friendly music, but that didn't even hint at the things to come. Kairos is nothing less than a reset for White Hinterland, with Dienel and bandmate Shawn Creeden dropping jazz from their vocabulary, and treating space as an instrument. Though light synth washes and gently percolating bass and beats are the predominant musical components, this is far from a cool electronic record; with Dienel's gorgeous, lulling melodies, often enshrouded in dubby atmosphere, pop music rarely sounds this submerged and aquatic -- yet, it's indescribably soulful. The free-floating, forward motion of album opener "Icarus" conjures images of night swimming as Dienel sings "I watch you stay still like a knife beneath the water" and then answers with a wordless falsetto, siren-call refrain. A few songs later, "Bow & Arrow" drinks from the same wellspring of inspiration as Dirty Projectors' Bitte Orca, but this is far more minimal, as a spindly guitar and Dienel's voice (reminiscent of the Projectors' Angel Deradoorian) rise and fall over Eno-esque loops of African percussion and not much else. If anything, Kairos is a perfect, effortless amalgamation of everything that's been happening in music the past few years, from the record's light dubstep rhythms to pop's recent rediscovery that less is truly more. No doubt fans of the aforementioned as well as the xx, Nite Jewel and even Arthur Russell's World of Echo need to give this a spin. This is a sleeper hit if I've ever heard one. [GH]

  EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING
Rush to Relax
(Goner)

"I Got a Feeling"
"Tuning Out"

After two almost flawless records my anticipation for this new Eddy Current Suppression Ring album was at a ridiculous level, and while I'm not really the type to scour the internet looking for leaked records, that doesn't mean I was above hassling their publicist for a copy on a daily basis. And I'm more than happy to report that it was all worth it and then some. Rush to Relax tackles head-on all of the would/could-isms rattling around my brain, and it is easily as good, if not better, than the first two.

The group kick things off with the wonderfully jittery "Anxiety" and then go into the classic "I Got a Feeling," with its proclamations peppered with introspections all wrapped up in the preferred rock 'n' roll song format. Speaking of that, if you've never heard Australia's ECSR, their sound is something close to Rose Tattoo taking up a new career as a Wire cover band. While they don't skimp on the straightforward rocking that their country is famous for, they can also be surprisingly honest and heartfelt on a few songs, like "Gentleman" and "I Can Be a Jerk," which are both great case studies for rocker dudes looking to maintain long term relationships with a lady. Don't worry too much, it's not all mushy stuff, as those songs are balanced by the perfect, punkoid blasts of "Walked into a Corner" and "Isn't It Nice," which together add up to two minutes of the best slash-and-burn you're gonna hear all year.

Really though, where Rush to Relax succeeds the most is in delivering the goods on the band's proven basics and at the same time tweaking their sound to allow growth in unexpected directions. ECSR have never shied away from long songs, but they sound more confident and comfortable than ever here with three tracks at or above the six-minute mark, but none of them feel long -- well, except maybe the last song, but that's just ye olde timey CD-era goofiness (the song clocks in at 24-plus minutes, but after the first six the CD runs out to the sound of waves lapping on the shore -- truncated vinyl version should be here soon). It is always great when expectations are met or even exceeded and other bands are going to have to work pretty hard to best this record. [DMa]

  HIGH PLACES
High Places vs. Mankind
(Thrill Jockey)

"Canada"
"Drift Slayer"

One might presume that ever since Brooklyn darlings High Places packed up for California, taking their sunny glitch-filled miniatures with them, that their next release would feature exotica-infused variants that shone even brighter. How could it not, with the duo lounging in the land of eternal sunshine? Go figure that for the band's second album, the confrontationally-titled High Places Vs. Mankind, they instead stripped back their quirky rhythms and sampledelica for an effort that is not only more streamlined and straightforward, but also darker. The sampler takes second fiddle as both members now pick up guitars to generate sound. Opener "The Longest Shadows" may be the group's finest moment yet, all stuttering beats and chiming guitars, with Mary Pearson's vocals mixed higher, her words clarified. "Constant Winter" is Pearson at her story-telling best, while "Drift Slayer" is a sumptuous ambient wash. Throughout, the album satisfies, moving away from world music quirkiness to re-emphasize song craft that will remind listeners the group is a pop band first and foremost. [AB]

  SHE & HIM
Volume Two
(Merge)

"In the Sun"
"Thieves"

Volume Two picks up pretty much where Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward's first album left off, in the gentle throes of early-'60's country-pop purism, crafting effortlessly retro nuggets of joyful abandon for those of you with the self-possession to admit that the indie-film starlet actually writes and sings better than most of the "musicians" you love to crow about. Front to back, this may not be quite as strong an album as the debut was (no big surprise, as Deschanel had years to write the songs that made it onto Volume One), and the new one might be a bit "cuter" than the first. But the highlights shine even brighter, like the debut single "In the Sun," set opener "Thieves," and a pitch-perfect take on Skeeter Davis' "Gonna Get Along without You Now." And Ward has really stepped up to the plate, with warm and wonderful orchestration and more than a few heart-tugging star turns on the guitar. The power of this duo comes from the juxtaposition of the relentlessly perky blue-eyed starlet and the dark and gruff axe-slinger, the hopeful love-struck tone of many lyrics with the minor-key melancholy of the music, or with a simple flip the soaring joy of the music against the loneliness of the lyrics. Remarkably, for a duo who each have so much going for themselves, and seemingly so little in common, She & Him have found a sweet harmony together that is more than the sum of its parts. (Customers will receive a free She & Him luggage tag with the purchase of their new album on CD or LP, while supplies last.) [JM]

  VARIOUS ARTISTS
Underwater Peoples Winter Review
(Underwater Peoples)

"Restless" Pill Wonder
"Apple Walk" Duck Tails

Finally! We've been waiting all season for the follow-up to this beloved young D.C. label's popular summer compilation, which introduced most of us to now-household names like Real Estate and Ducktails. The most trusted folks in mellow indie tastemaking return with another handpicked selection of "old" names (Julian Lynch, Pill Wonder) and new (Air Waves, Alex Bleeker) in D.I.Y. pop. The diversity of this second compilation is proof enough that the label has matured immensely in just the past few months; whereas previously, the track list was casually stacked with multiple songs from every artist in their small but prolific circle, their sophomore mixtape indicates that they're eager to maximize the power of their respected opinion. The Winter Review features 15 all-new tracks by 15 different, promising artists. Some might argue that new tracks by Real Estate and Ducktails are worth the bargain price of $5 alone, but there's really so much more being offered here.

It seems unfair to single out specific tracks on this through-and-through outstanding compilation, but one of the best contributions is by Alex Bleeker, the bassist for Real Estate, whose phenomenal 12" with back-up band the Freaks recently emerged on the Underwater Peoples label. "These Days" is a positively infectious sing-along, with Woods-style falsetto verses and a simple, rambling guitar melody as its wordless chorus -- the outro even has reverbed bongos! Mountain Man is another new artist of note, a three-girl folk outfit from Bennington, Vermont. Their "Dog Song" is immediately arresting, not just because their nearly a cappella approach separates them from the traditional rock set-ups of many other bands on the comp, but because their strong, instinctive harmonies against gentle, unimposing guitar demand every ounce of your attention. The compilation could have no better closing than Liam the Younger's track "Please See," which begins inauspiciously, but whose dynamics are reminiscent of the Microphones or the Antlers, a strongly K Records-inspired indie ballad which one minute you strain to hear, and the next, cathartically explodes. We're also thrilled to see the inclusion of Brooklyn's Air Waves in this typically Jersey-heavy pack, which foreshadows Nicole Schneit's long-awaited 12" coming out on U.P. later this year.

Thank goodness for Underwater Peoples. There are few reliable sources these days for discovering new, quality underground music, but we would be hard-pressed to name a band on here that we don't find consistently catchy and refreshing! When was the last time you bought a CD by an artist who has fewer than 500 friends on MySpace ... and enjoyed it? [KS]

BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY & THE CAIRO GANG
The Wonder Show of the World
(Drag City)

"Troublesome Houses"
"Go Folks, Go"

Across Will Oldham's myriad of releases under various "band" names over the years, you get slight variations on a remarkably consistent theme -- a theme of dusty homespun Americana seen through a prism of weirdo individualism, a lone oddball's haunting take on traditional folk and country song forms. The variations are a matter of degrees: a little more rock on this one, a little more desperation in that. If a listener is pre-disposed to Oldham's high-lonesome voice and inscrutably evocative poetry, most all of his records will greet you like an old friend ushering you in from the cold. This new one, under the name Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & the Cairo Gang, is a collaboration with another one-man band by the name of Emmett Kelly, who has released some pretty decent music of his own under the Cairo Gang moniker. Kelly's music owes a debt to '70s British folk and L.A. folk-rock of a similar era, and that sort of slick acoustic production defines Wonder Show of the World, a spare, ethereal collection of songs that combines Oldham's songwriting and lead vocals with Kelly's sharp playing and harmonies. At its best, like on the gentle strut and shuffle of "The Sounds Are Always Begging," or the meandering CSN&Y-ish opener "Troublesome Houses," you are embraced by a gentle, lilting swing rich with promise that builds into an almost triumphant tale of hope gone bad on the inevitable slide into darkness. The album is peppered with such moments, both lyrically and musically tiptoeing between joy and sorrow, raw emotion and cool classic rock sheen, and while it is not Oldham's most immediately moving, it's a satisfying pit stop on a long and winding road.   MICHAEL YONKERS
Lovely Gold
(Drag City)

It's starting to look like the Yonkers archives may really be a boundless fruited plain of unearthly delights; De Stijl (and eventually Sub Pop) officially kicked-off the Yonkers resurgence a few years back with their stunning Microminiature Love reissue, and it's been a nonstop eccentric cabaret ever since. While some of these discoveries have certainly been more immediate than others, none have failed to be utterly intriguing glimpses of a truly unique musical visionary at work. Lovely Gold is beamed to us straight from the turbulent musical year of 1977, but the actual date here is irrelevant, since the recordings wouldn't sound out of place had they appeared anytime between the mid-60s and, well...today! There's an inscrutability here that ranges from Godz-like psychedelic pandemonium to moments that recall a more sociable, far less creepy Gary Wilson. Of course, it wouldn't be a Michael Yonkers album if there weren't a couple of songs that busted the mold, and Lovely Gold is no exception; there's a really beautiful, ethereal tone to some of the tunes here, where Yonkers layers his vocals up to achieve a choral, spectral effect. For my money, this is one of the best Yonkers reissues to come down the pike yet. Gather round, kids, it Yonkers time again! [JTr]

  LOVE IS ALL
Two Thousand and Ten Injuries
(Polyvinyl)

"Bigger Bolder"
"Repetition"

Sweden's prime indie-pop export is back with their third full-length, and it's a pleasure to say they aren't resting on their laurels. While not wanting to come off and say that the band has "grown" or "calmed down" by any measure, I find that these songs pack the same amount of energy into more measured explosions of rhythm and joy -- they're certainly taking Bow Wow Wow, the post-Pop Group bands, modern contemporaries like Ponytail, and even the Eurovision Song Contest as a direct influence on where they are today. Reinvention within a pop framework is not an easy or forgiving task, yet with Two Thousand and Ten Injuries Love Is All rises to the challenge, offering up twelve more bouncy, instantly memorable tunes that turn a corner for the band without losing the plot.   KLEENEX/LILIPUT
Live Recordings, TV-Clips & Roadmovie
(Kill Rock Stars)

"Ain't You"
"In a Mess"

Kill Rock Stars issues this wonderful document of live recordings and television performances by Kleenex/Liliput, one of the most distinctive, unique, and influential bands of the post-punk era. The CD features two live concerts -- one 1978 show from the initial Kleenex lineup of the band, and one 1983 show by the final lineup of the band that came to be known as Liliput, with each show featuring spirited takes on tunes from their classic singles and albums, and with each show featuring (two different sets of) two previously unrecorded songs! The DVD is the real treat here, though: early Swiss TV performances, a few brief live clips, and a nice 30 minute "Road Movie" featuring super 8 footage shot by the group on their last tour, set to Liliput's music. A crown jewel for the hardcore fan, and a wonderful document of a spirited band in their element! [IQ]

  AUTECHRE
Oversteps
(Warp)

"Ilanders"
"Qplay"

With their first pronounceable album title that can actually be used in a game of Scrabble (try putting down "Quaristice" and see where it gets you), one suspects that Autechre are -- if not humanizing the void -- then warming it up a bit. The duo's tenth album has them returning to the melancholic melodies that underpinned the stuttering rhythms of their earliest work. Something very close to harpsichord spindles appears in "see on see," creating a warm, inviting listen -- an unexpected turn of events in the Autechre listening experience, but a welcome one. It's not the duo's most groundbreaking album, but they continue to challenge themselves and their fans by relentlessly following their own path, even when that entails looping back across some familiar territory, and there are plenty of great moments within.   BREAKAGE
Foundation
(Digital Soundboy)

"Open Up"
"Vial" feat. Burial

London based producer Breakage, a/k/a James Boyle, has been breaking beats since 2000. Through the years, he's maintained a steady rise within the drum'n'bass scene, able to shift with the ever-evolving sounds coming from the UK. Beginning on 4hero's Reinforced imprtin, Boyle has releases countless 12"s and remixes on taste-making labels like Planet Mu and Bassbin, laying down a strong track record along the way. His most recent remix is for Massive Attacks' "Paradise Circus," where he skillfully re-imagines the song in almost two parts, one a more headstrong filtered house vibe, while the other brings back the sped-up breaks of d'n'b. He is now signed to Digital Soundboy, the label of '90s drum'n'bass pioneer Shy FX, which sort of describes his work perfectly: digital soundboy.

A hearty blend of reggae aesthetics and up-to-the-minute technology, for Foundation, his newest and most wide-reaching album, Breakage leads us on a diverse and engaging journey. His skills seem to be in the ability to merge genres, always aimed at the dancefloor, yet his style can transform from dubby downtempo, to sound system-influenced dubstep, to grime and UK hip-hop, and from updated crisp drum'n'bass to snappy UK funky. On the anthemic "Higher," he samples, then freaks, the "Hallelujah" chorus from the beloved Happy Mondays song to nice effect. It's been a while since I've heard such a diverse yet solid dance album, much in line with the full-lengths from Benga, yet this reaches further. Boyle's sound is near perfect, a very British brew of dub, breaks, deep vibes and digital soul. His work with vocalists is successful throughout with a variety of singers and rappers, including Roots Manuva, Doneao, Erin, and Zarif. There are full-throttle R&B vocals, fiery reggae toasters, and frantic British rappers, but the biggest surprise may be from the cavernous mechanics of guest Burial. I'll leave that one for you to discover on your own. This is great stuff, fresh and vibrant, dancefloor ready, and headphone welcoming. One of the best electronic long players I've heard so far this year. And further proof that drum'n'bass is back, though some will argue it never left. [DG]

  EMERALDS
Emeralds
(Hanson)

"Geode"
"Diotima"

Along with Oneohtrix Point Never, Cleveland's Emeralds lead the charge for modern domestic drone product, beginning with the audio inspiration of nature and the sounds of renewal, and layering a masterful patina of synthesizer and guitar orchestration on top. This new CD reissues a vinyl LP from 2009, and moves the band further into serious Ash Ra/Gottsching/Hoenig new age worship, while developing a progressive stance missing from some of their earlier works. The 18-minute "Passing Away" represents a new plateau of quality for Emeralds, one of the most engaging pieces they've yet to release. Look, there's a bunch of acts trying to do this, and falling over themselves to get as many releases out as possible. Emeralds used to be this kind of artist, but they are getting too good to allow for the mass construction/micro production ethic on which they built their empire. Each release is now a statement, each too good to be buried on some limited edition cassette or CD-R. Here's yet another, and if you want to achieve peace in this fiscal year, you'll strap on some headphones and let this one take you into the beyond. [DM]

  SAVATH Y SAVALAS
The Predicate - Dub Version
(Stones Throw)

"Pavo Real Plucked"
"La Loba Collection"

Last year's excellent Savath & Savalas record, La Llama, saw Scott Herren's Prefuse 73 instincts hop in the backseat, while Eva Puyelo Muns and Roberto Carlos Lange's stunning vocal work drove Herren's gorgeous Catalan folk/Brazilian/electro compositions straight into the ocean. That album built its vocal chapels on sunburned Technicolor filmstrips of sneaky, undulating rhythms, and great as they were you sort of wished that Herren would push the singers aside and just let himself groove for a couple of minutes. Now, hardly a year later, Herren delivers The Predicate (Dub Version), a re-imagining of La Llama that washes away some of the sheen and emphasizes the brittle yet striking mechanics underneath Herren's blissed-out production work. "Pavo Real Plucked" alternates between insistent swells and blushing release, and on "The Predicate and the Library," Herren introduces at least four different beats amid a myriad of textures while never resolving any of them, instead bleeding unexpectedly into "Me Voy and Resolved." With The Predicate, Herren remixes the intoxicating ingredients that formed La Llama, arranging them in striking new poses that will feel more grounded and familiar to fans of his Prefuse 73 projects.   MADLIB
Medicine Show #3: Beat Konducta in Africa
(MMS)

"The Frontline"
"Endless Cold"

Following up Flight to Brazil, the second volume of Madlib's year-long record-a-month Medicine Show series, the third installment finds the Beat Kunducta in chop-n-screw mode dissecting and reconfiguring the heavy grooves of the music of Africa. Much like his previous Beat Konducta outings, this one goes for breadth rather than depth, stretching across 43 tracks, most lasting around a minute, to create a murky and funky exploratory journey across the continent via chunky percussion loops, psych-guitar grooves, lots of sound bits, travelogue/historical snippets, and the smoky imaginary soundtrack vibes and added accents that have become Madlib's calling card. From funk to rock, Afrobeat to highlife, Medicine Show No. 3: Beat Konducta in Africa continues on Madlib's medical mission to prescribe small doses of funky for those in need. If you liked Ethiopium from Madlib's brother Oh No, this one is almost as intoxicating. [DG]

"Diana's Hair"

If ever I doubted that a full-on '90s indie rock revival was in full swing, then British trio Let's Wrestle and their debut In the Court of the Wrestling Let's have arrived to insist emphatically that wayward glances to a couple decades past might not be such a bad thing after all. Favoring punk-infused slacker pop above all else, these three follow up their handful of singles with a surprisingly great debut that, while short on any real innovation, makes for a consistently catchy, and often hilariously self-effacing album. Right from the start, Let's Wrestle tip their hand, as album opener "My Arms Don't Bend That Way, Damn It!" sets the stage with pounding rhythms and insistently buoyant melodies. These three don't bother to switch up the attack much from there, but as tracks like "We Are the Men You'll Grow to Love Soon" and "Song for Old People" effortlessly show, their playful three-chord screeds are just fine the way they are, serving as an effective vehicle for their surprisingly insightful and comedic lyrics about (among other things) the perils of growing up. Ultimately, Let's Wrestle sound like they'd be pretty well-versed in the art of playing hooky from work to do bong hits, drink beer in the park, and listen to Pavement and Clean records. If that sounds like your bag, then In the Court of the Wrestling Let's probably is, too. [MC]

  LEMONADE
Pure Moods
(True Panther Sounds)

"Lifted"
"Sunsplash"

After a couple of indie rock excursions, the True Panther imprint wowed us last year with their release from local 14-year-old fly girls the Fly Girlz, the truly uplifting old-school new-school high-school hip-hop jam Da Brats From Da 'Ville, and now they make another sharp turn with a trio of groovy 12"s that explore three distinct directions to the dance floor, each with its own vaguely tropical inspiration. All vinyl only, with download codes included.

Funneling soca, dub and calypso through their sticky, hazy harmonies, clanging drums and loose bass, Lemonade's new EP, Pure Moods, delivers a fresh take on sample-based electronic dance music. Treading in "chillwave" territory, the beats here are unrelenting and infinitely looped around the bright and lighthearted vocals. And -- setting all colonialism comments aside for this review -- Lemonade's personal incorporation of Caribbean and Balearic music works in their favor here, creating tracks with constantly interesting sound exchanges and rhythms. A nice evolution from the soulful post-punk of the band's enjoyable 2008 debut.

  AHMED JANKA NABAY
Bubu King
(True Panther Sounds)

"Top Sul Bah"

In the past few years, we've witnessed many genres of African music crossover -- highlife, Afrobeat, etc. -- to the West. One genre that is still mostly obscured is bubu, the moniker of the fast-paced, rhythmic street songs indigenous to the Sierra Leone village of Ahmed Janka Nabay, who makes a play here for the title of King of Bubu. Recorded at Forensic studios in Freetown during Sierra Leone's civil war in 2000, Bubu Kingrepresents Nabay's transformation of conventional bubu music into a more updated version of the genre. Using both traditional instruments like bamboo flutes and percussion as well as modern electronics, Nabay creates truly unique, danceable tracks that straddle genres while crafting new ones.

  TANLINES
Settings
(True Panther Sounds)

"Policy of Trust"
"Real Life"

On their debut EP, Brooklyn experimental pop duo Tanlines create a texture-rich collection of songs out of R&B-styled synths, reverberating vocals and dance-able polyrhythmic drum beats. Unlike their members' past outfits (Professor Murder, Don Caballero), the duo operate within the sphere of a more tropical dance pop, inspired just as much by Saturday nights dancing at the club as they are by present and past indie rock. The result is a swath of catchy, vibrant tracks, each one melting into the next -- a fitting and welcome introduction to the band. [PG]

  BILL CALLAHAN
Rough Travel for a Rare Thing
(Drag City)

This is the first live record Bill Callahan has released in a career nearing the 20-year mark, and while his sedate, somewhat lonely music may not immediately scream out "TAKE IT TO THE STAGE," anyone who has seen Callahan perform (for instance at his riveting Record Store Day in-store at OM last year -- this year we've got the Pains of Being Pure at Heart and the Drums!) knows that his shows are intense and utterly mesmerizing. This album, recorded in 2007 at a tiny Melbourne club featured an odd band -- three fiddles, bass and drums (Kate Connor, Lara Goodridge, Pria Schwall, Tim Rogers and Lawrence Pike) -- and the group swings and occasionally rocks through 11 Smog and Callahan classics, including "Diamond Dancer," "Cold-Blooded Old Tomes," and "Bathysphere." Double-LP only, in other words, no CD.

  SERENA MANEESH
No 2: Abyss in B Minor
(4AD)

"Reprobate!"
"Blow Yr Brains Out in the Mourning Rain"

The first thing you should know about Serena-Maneesh's follow-up to their eponymous debut album from almost five years ago is that it was recorded in a cave in the outskirts of Oslo. Sure enough, there's something darker and dare we say more underground happening on Abyss in B Minor, as otherworldly textures poke and warp around the lava guitars, not as much leading the band into more Loveless territory, but much of the time, away from it. Sure, the honey-druggy vocal melodies of "I Just Want to See Your Face" and "Melody for Jaana" could have been sung by Kevin and Belinda, but My Bloody Valentine never reached the sinister depths of the guitars in "Honeyjinx," in which every chord blast seems to drop us a thousand feet deeper towards the earth's burning core.

  VARIOUS ARTISTS
Luk Thung! The Roots of Thai Funk
(Zudrangma)

Zudrangma Records' third installation of Thai funk, the fact that the CD is packaged in beautiful bamboo weave from Phanat Nikholm and comes with a pretty cool poster could easily be the sole reason for snatching this volume up if not for the brilliantly exotic sounds contained within. Luk Thung literally translates to mean "song of the child of the fields," and here traditional Thai-folk melodies mingle with the deep funk, soul and disco rhythms of the West, making for some of the most original and infectious merging of sounds that you'll ever hear. Very limited, so whether you're a beat-digger or a fan of the musical excavations of Sublime Frequencies, you won't want to miss this.

  GOLDFRAPP
Head First
(Mute)

"Believer"
"Dreaming"

After taking a break from disco balls and strobe lights with the pastoral chill-out of 2008's Seventh Tree, Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory have turned their eyes back towards the dancefloor with Head First. We're not talking the glammy-electro-stomp of '03's Black Cherry or '06's Supernature, however, but rather an unabashed take on '80s pop music -- not really a surprise given their cover of Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" a couple of years back. At times Alison does indeed seem to be channeling her inner Olivia, maybe even a little "Love Is a Battlefield"-era Pat Benatar too, and with lots of bubbling Moroder-esque synths and keyboard swells, we're wondering if the duo's stage show will include a folding chair and a bucket of water, a la Flashdance. Seriously though, only Goldfrapp can re-imagine most people's guilty-pleasure music into something fresh, vibrant and their own.

  DOUBLE DAGGER

Preview Songs on Other Music's Download Store

Featuring former members of Baltimore's League of Death and Economist, Double Dagger follow-up last year's More full-length with this new EP containing five punk blasts that have nothing to do with the dream-pop and neon electronic sounds that have been keeping Charm City on the music map these past few years. Not surprising, really, considering groups like Lungfish called B'more home, and Double Dagger's intense post-hardcore anthems do indeed exist as the perfect bridge between the golden days of Dischord and newcomers like Fucked Up, No Age and Pissed Jeans. Added bonus: the record sleeve was created by the band in their Post Typography design studio and is available in three different cover choices.

  DRINK UP BUTTERCUP
Born and Thrown on a Hook
(Yep Roc)

"Sosey and Dosey"
"Even Think"

The debut full-length from Philly's Drink Up Buttercup plays like a psychedelic trip to the carnival with the band throwing every music style they can think of into the blender -- from Beatles/Kinks melodies, to vaudeville, folk, garage-rock, and hell, even a few "music concrete" interludes. What comes out is the aural equivalent of a herky-jerky rollercoaster ride on Coney Island's Cyclone, and it's just as much fun but without the whiplash. Check out "Sosey and Dosey," a see-saw sing-a-long that will instantly lodge itself into your head, sounding kind of like a collab between Man Man and Beta Band, after both groups swallowed a bunch of happy pills.

ARCHIE BRONSON OUTFIT
Coconut
(Domino)

"Shark's Tooth"
"Wild Strawberries"

With Mo'Wax/DFA's Tim Goldsworthy sitting behind the console for this one, England's Archie Bronson Outfit aren't completely eschewing their swampy, psychedelic garage rock for more cowbell, but there's definitely more of a groove sitting under the murky, hot-wired guitars and Sam Windett's heavily reverbed, David Thomas yelps. The genre-hopping might take a few songs to get used to but it's not as jarring as you might think -- opener "Magnetic Warrior" storms out of the gate like prime-era Hawkwind while the taut, linear funk of "Hoola" and "Chunk" mixes death-disco P.I.L with a little chaser of Orange Juice.
