Complete Mythology Box
(The Numero Group)

The most lovingly assembled and revelatory box set of the year! Six LPs document legendary soul singer Syl Johnson's pre-Hi endeavors -- two of which are detailed reproductions of his classic albums Dresses Too Short and Is It Because I'm Black, with the remaining four grouped according to his label work of the era and styled like '60s artifacts that never were -- and digital lovers also get these 81 songs collected across four CDs. This is an impeccably crafted, oversized set featuring ruminations from Syl himself, a treasure trove of photographs, and a lot of new detail on the origins of these tracks. A lavish package so thorough and all encompassing that it easily stands as one of the best reissues of the year. (Free domestic shipping.)

How to Wreck a Nice Beach: The Vocoder from World War II to Hip-Hop, the Machine Speaks
(Stop Smiling)

Noted music journalist Dave Tompkin's ode to the history of the vocoder is an astounding book, detailing the origins of the talk box. It seems simple enough, but once you dive into the story, you'll be amazed at the rich history of this invention. From its origins as a WWII espionage tool, to its second life as a booty shakin' electro-funk instrument and contribution to cell phone technology, Tompkins' meticulously researched book reads like a long-lost Pynchon sci-fi novel... except, of course, it's all true! One of the best non-fiction books you'll read all year, featuring cameos from Sun Ra, New Kids on the Block, Winston Churchill and Dam-Funk! Check out these two mixes from the author, meant to accompany the book:

Bossa Nova and the Rise of Brazilian Music in the 1960s
(Soul Jazz)

Absolutely lovely, hardcover compendium of album sleeves from the golden era of Bossa Nova, selected and edited by Gilles Peterson for Soul Jazz records. Beautifully illustrating the bold, modernist typography and design of the era with hundreds of examples of rare masterpieces for labels like Elenco and Philips by Joao Gilberto, Tom Jobim, Nara Leao, Vinicius De Moraes, Caetano Veloso and many, many others. The title's a bit of a misnomer, as it actually moves beyond that style to encompass choice bits from Tropicalia and M.P.B. as well. (Due to weight, a small extra shipping charge may be applied.)

The Original Mono Recordings

Well, what else is there to say beyond the fact that this is basically eight albums of some of the most important music ever put to tape, exactly the way it was meant to be heard. Real Dylan heads have always known that mono mixes of his classic albums were where it was at, and at long last Sony has rightfully restored them to the place of glory they deserve, with each disc beautifully laid in a replica of an LP jacket. Honestly, it doesn't get more essential than this! (Free domestic shipping.)

Choose: Songwriters or Best Lyrics Ever
(The Wild Unknown)

The Wild Unknown is an independent, family-run business that specializes in handmade objects and is spearheaded by visual artist/musician Kim Krans. Two of her lovely, music-themed calendars have been very popular with Other Music customers this year. Songwriters features prints of her hand-drawn pictures of a diverse range of notables like Bob Dylan, John and Yoko, Neil Young, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Townes Van Zandt, Dolly Parton, Kurt Cobain, and a young Michael Jackson, with a corresponding song quote.

Best Lyrics Ever focuses on the words alone, with lines from the likes of Dylan, Kate Bush, Patti Smith, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Elvis Presley, Thin Lizzy, Fleetwood Mac, and Silver Jews, whose "I'm gonna love you for a hundred years" graces the month of January. Who wouldn't want to be greeted like that in the New Year?

Quine Tapes LP Box Set

For the first time on vinyl, Sundazed released the Velvet Underground's legendary Quine Tapes as a lavish, remastered six-LP box set. The whole thing is pretty drool-worthy, with three gorgeous gatefold jackets (with new and much improved artwork), poster and handbill inserts, rare photos, and liner notes by David Fricke. Listening to the Velvets stretch out the songs is the most revealing aspect of the recordings; as they open up into flurries of white noise and shambling rock, they transform gorgeous moments of pop music into angst-driven discordance. Parson Sound LP Box Set
(Subliminal Sounds)

Subliminal Sounds finally releases this holy grail of Swedish psychedelia on vinyl. The deluxe package is a three-LP boxed set, with newly revised, extensive liner notes, interviews and photos. Incomparably heavy, Parson Sound was as influenced by the minimalist and repetitive music of Terry Riley as they were by the cosmic expansiveness of Grateful Dead, and this classic set has been a certified Other Music all-time-favorite ever since we first started playing it repeatedly back in April of 2001. Man, it sure looks good to finally see the spine of this package sticking out of our LP shelves! (Free domestic shipping.)

The Acid Archives - The Second Edition

Simply put, there is no better resource out there for information on rare American, Canadian and Mexican psych records than Patrick Lundborg's Acid Archives. The historical perspective, level of knowledge, and overall scope of the reviews within provide a much-needed reference against some of the wildest music you'll ever hear. It's a positively fascinating look into an enormous and under-documented realm of outsider music, and is most highly recommended, whether you're buying it for a collector, a simply curious music lover, or people who enjoy extremely well-done music reference guides in general. Event Poster: All Our Friends Are in New York
(M + E)

For your favorite Magnetic Fields fan (who might even be you), a very limited, collectable poster designed my M + E, announcing the opening of the Magnetic Fields exhibition, All Our Friends Are in New York, which we hosted at Other Music in late October to celebrate the theatrical release of the Strange Powers film. Perhaps you were there, perusing the great band photographs by Gail O'Hara, Emma Straub and John Woo while Stephin Merritt DJ'ed a set of '60s pop and girl-group sounds in the corner. Approximately 11"x14" in size, these posters are hand-screened and numbered by the artists and guaranteed to make your friend feel like the luckiest guy (or gal) in the Lower East Side -- or wherever they may live.

Live at Other Music
(Domino Recording Co.)

There aren't too many left of this limited 12" of Dirty Projectors' live performance at Other Music. Recorded on the eve of their 2009 Bitte Orca tour, the band would soon win the hearts and heads of music fans the world over. Favoring intimacy and warmth and delivered via acoustic instrumentation, Dirty Projectors turned in what is no doubt one of the most memorable in-stores in Other Music's history. This live set (which is also included on the expanded edition of Bitte Orca) sounds great on vinyl, featuring: "Fluorescent Half Dome," "Temecula Sunrise," "Two Doves," "Cannibal Resource," and "No Intention."

Exit Through the Gift Shop

Banksy has described Exit Through the Gift Shop as: "The story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable and failed." Anyone familiar with this British graffiti/prankster didn't expect the movie to really shed any light on this anonymous art star, and the storyline is so bizarre that one has to question whether this is, in fact, even a true documentary. That said, Exit is an intriguing look at street art, charting the rise of Thierry Guetta, and featuring notables like Invader, Shepard Fairey, Monsieur André, and many more at work. Narrated by Rhys Ifans with music from Richard Hawley and Portishead/BEAK>'s Geoff Barrow.
